Why Professional Fundraisers Need Community More Than Ever
Last week, the Greater Giving team had the privilege of attending the AFP Genesee Valley Conference in Rochester, New York, where nonprofit professionals, fundraising leaders, consultants, and industry partners gathered for a full day of learning, networking, and inspiration.
As fundraising continues to evolve, one thing remains constant: the importance of community. Organizations like the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) provide fundraisers with the education, resources, ethical guidance, and professional connections needed to navigate challenges and maximize impact.
Whether you’re new to fundraising or a seasoned development professional, being part of AFP offers access to ongoing professional development, industry best practices, certifications, networking opportunities, and a nationwide community of peers who understand the unique opportunities and challenges of nonprofit work.
The Value of Your Local AFP Chapter
While AFP’s national resources are invaluable, local chapters bring those benefits directly into your community.
Across the country, AFP chapters create opportunities for fundraisers to connect with peers facing similar challenges, share ideas, celebrate successes, and learn from one another throughout the year. These local networks often become trusted sources of support, mentorship, and inspiration.
The AFP Genesee Valley chapter exemplifies this spirit of collaboration. Throughout the conference, we met passionate fundraising professionals representing organizations of all sizes—from grassroots nonprofits to large regional institutions—each working tirelessly to advance missions that improve lives throughout the Rochester community and beyond.
Their dedication was inspiring, and their commitment to serving donors, volunteers, beneficiaries, and communities reminded us why fundraising is such meaningful work.
Learning, Sharing, and Growing Together
One of the highlights of the day was the opportunity to connect with fellow vendors and partners who support nonprofits behind the scenes. From technology providers and consultants to philanthropic advisors, it was encouraging to see so many organizations invested in helping nonprofits achieve their goals.
Beyond the networking, the conference featured an impressive lineup of speakers who shared actionable insights, fresh perspectives, and innovative strategies fundraisers can bring back to their organizations.
The conversations throughout the day reinforced an important truth: fundraising is never static. The organizations that continue to grow are the ones that remain curious, adaptable, and committed to learning.
Thank You for Joining “Elevating Your Events Beyond Galas and Golf”
A special thank you to everyone who attended our session, “Elevating Your Events Beyond Galas and Golf.”
Too often, organizations view fundraising events as a single evening on the calendar. But the most successful events create impact long before guests arrive and continue delivering value long after the final paddle raise.
During the session, we explored how nonprofits can build intentional momentum across three critical phases:
Before the Event
Creating anticipation, engaging supporters early, recruiting ambassadors, and building meaningful donor touchpoints that increase participation and excitement.
During the Event
Designing experiences that connect attendees to your mission, inspire generosity, and strengthen relationships with supporters.
After the Event
Extending engagement through stewardship, storytelling, impact reporting, and strategic follow-up that transforms one-time attendees into long-term advocates and donors.
When organizations approach events as year-round relationship-building opportunities rather than one-night fundraisers, they unlock greater donor retention, stronger community engagement, and more sustainable fundraising results.
Couldn’t Attend? Start Building Your Strategy Today
If you weren’t able to attend the conference or our session, you can still begin applying these concepts to your own events.
We’ve created a worksheet designed to help nonprofit leaders map out their pre-event, event-day, and post-event engagement strategy so every fundraiser creates lasting impact beyond the event itself.
