Showing Gratitude: Thanking Donors During the Season of Giving

8 Unique Ways to Show Gratitude This Giving Season

The season of giving is here, and it’s a great reminder for nonprofits to reflect on the people who make our work possible: our donors. Saying “thank you” isn’t just a box to check—it’s about showing genuine appreciation and strengthening those relationships. So, how do we express our gratitude in a way that feels meaningful, especially during the holidays? Here are some ways to thank donors that have worked for me (and might inspire you too!).

1. Keep It Personal

Generic thank-yous are easy, but they don’t make an impression. A handwritten note that highlights what the donor’s contribution made possible can mean so much. For example:

“Your $50 donation gave a family a week’s worth of groceries during the holidays. Thank you for being part of that!”

2. Celebrate Donors’ Stories

Take the time to highlight why your donors give. Whether it’s a social media post, a feature in your newsletter, or a short video, sharing their stories is a great way to honor their generosity and inspire others to give.

3. Host a Thank-You Event

Think about a cozy in-person gathering. A gratitude event can bring your donors together to celebrate their impact. It’s not about being fancy—it’s about connection.

4. Show the Impact

Your donors believe in your mission, so make sure they see the difference they’re making. Whether it’s through photos, a video, or an end-of-year report, share the wins their support made possible. For example, if you have a personal relationship with a donor, take it a step further—send them a photo from a program they helped fund, along with an authentic note that says, “You helped make the ADAPTIdance program happen for 52 kids! Look how happy our athletes are!” A small, thoughtful gesture like this can make a big impression and reinforce just how vital their support is.

5. Add a Personal Touch

Small gestures can leave a big impact. Handwritten holiday cards, a simple ornament, or even a short video from a program participant saying “thank you” can really make someone’s day.

6. Recognize Publicly

Everyone loves a little acknowledgment! Whether it’s thanking donors with a shoutout on social media or their name in your newsletter, showing public appreciation can go a long way.

7. Involve OthersLeague of Dreams Opening Day Bakersfield California

This one’s my favorite. Get your team, board, or even program participants involved in thanking donors. When a donor hears from someone their gift directly helped, it creates an emotional connection that lasts.

You can also take it a step further by inviting donors to be part of special moments. For example, let them throw the first pitch at Opening Day or help deliver food baskets to members of the community. These experiences not only show gratitude but also allow donors to see their impact firsthand, creating memories that strengthen their connection to your mission.

8. Don’t Stop After the Holidays

Gratitude doesn’t end on January 1. Make saying “thank you” a part of your regular donor communications throughout the year. Whether it’s a quick check-in, an unexpected card, or an update about a project they supported, keep the appreciation flowing.

Gratitude Matters

Donors give because they believe in what we’re doing, but they stay when they feel appreciated. Taking the time to thank them thoughtfully and sincerely isn’t just about being polite—it’s about showing them they’re a vital part of your mission.

So this season, let’s double down on gratitude. It’s a small gesture with a huge impact, and it’s the best way to inspire continued generosity and our collective purpose.

How are you thanking donors? I’d love to hear your ideas—share them in the comments!
