It’s that time of year again! From April 21st to 27th, 2024, we celebrate National Volunteer Week – a dedicated time to recognize the incredible impact volunteers have on our communities. This year’s theme, “Celebrate Service,” is a beautiful call to action, reminding us to shine a light on the people and causes that inspire us to give back.

Think of volunteers as the heart of any non-profit organization. They are the tireless donors of their time, energy, and skills, making a tangible difference in the lives of others. On top of that, people that volunteer are twice as likely to donate to a charity than those that don’t volunteer, according to The Corporation for National & Community Service.

The Power of 3 R’s: Building a Thriving Volunteer Program

But how do we ensure a vibrant volunteer program that continues to attract and retain these dedicated individuals? Here, the magic lies in the 3 R’s of Volunteer Management:

  • Recruitment: Spreading the word about volunteer opportunities is crucial. Utilize your website, social media, newsletters, local listings, and partnerships with community centers to reach potential volunteers.
  • Retention: Once you have amazing volunteers, keeping them engaged is key. Offer training opportunities, create a sense of belonging, and provide regular feedback to show their contributions are valued.
  • Recognition: A simple “thank you” goes a long way. Publicly acknowledge volunteers’ achievements, host appreciation events, and personalize recognition to their specific contributions.
